The Montreal Roses secured a 2-0 victory over AFC Toronto in Northern Super League play on Sunday, thanks to Marie-Yasmine Alidou’s winning penalty goal in the 55th minute. Elyse Bennett also contributed with her ninth goal of the season to give the Roses (9-4-3) a comfortable lead under interim head coach Maryse Bard-Martel.
Although Shelina Zadorsky seemed to equalize for Toronto (7-5-4) in the 68th minute, her goal was disallowed due to an offside ruling. Roses’ goalkeeper Anna Karpenko showcased her skills by facing 20 shots, with nine on target, to secure a clean sheet.
Toronto’s keeper, Sabrina D’Angelo, faced seven shots, five of which were on target. The Roses played their first match following the dismissal of head coach Robert Rositoiu, who was let go after a 1-0 defeat to Simcoe County in the W Canadian Championship.
