An explosion near a train station in Augsburg, Germany led to a temporary closure of the transport hub on Wednesday morning due to a suspicious object discovery. The police later confirmed that the object was harmless, leading to the reopening of the station at 10 a.m. Trains resumed their operations shortly after.
According to police spokesperson Timo Küfner, the situation was deemed safe following the examination of the object found at the main train station. The incident, involving an unidentified object that exploded near the station around 3:15 a.m., resulted in minor injuries to a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man, both Ukrainian citizens.
Subsequently, a second unexploded suspicious object was found at the station, prompting its closure at 8:30 a.m. Explosives experts from the Bavarian state criminal police office were dispatched to investigate the scene. Küfner stated that the motive behind the explosion was under investigation.
The disruption caused by the incident affected road traffic and public transportation in the vicinity of the station during the early morning hours. Reports suggested that the explosion occurred near a jewelry store, indicating that the train station was not the primary target.
