UEFA is gearing up to lodge a criminal complaint against FIFA president Gianni Infantino in Swiss courts due to potential financial mismanagement concerning his failed proposal to sell future World Cup profits to private investors. The European soccer body disclosed on Thursday that it has submitted paperwork in a Manhattan court seeking discovery of possible evidence from Thrive Capital Management, a New York investment fund established by Joshua Kushner.
Furthermore, UEFA has also initiated a request in a southern Florida district for approval of discovery “in a foreign proceeding” against FIFA itself, which maintains offices in Coral Gables, a suburb of Miami. The intended anchor investors, Thrive and Kushner, were planning to hand over $4.2 billion for a 20 per cent stake in a subsidiary tasked with managing FIFA’s commercial events, including the prestigious World Cup.
In a 56-page document reviewed by The Associated Press, UEFA’s legal team indicated that they are contemplating a Swiss criminal proceeding against Infantino and potentially other FIFA officials for criminal mismanagement as per Article 158 of the Swiss Criminal Code. The document also hinted that the $4.2 billion valuation could be an inflated price promoted by Infantino for his personal gain.
After facing strong opposition from global soccer leaders, including UEFA, Infantino shelved the sell-off plan on August 1. UEFA had initially issued a warning to FIFA on August 3, cautioning against the destruction or concealment of any “relevant materials” related to the proposal. According to UEFA lawyers, Infantino’s plan was portrayed as a means to unlock FIFA’s commercial potential but was, in reality, a scheme for personal enrichment at the expense of FIFA and other entities in the football community.
FIFA and Thrive representatives have been contacted for their input on the matter. Earlier on Thursday, Infantino received public support from Saudi Arabia, the host nation for the 2034 World Cup. The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) expressed its current backing for Infantino’s endeavors to mend global soccer unity. Infantino has cultivated strong ties with Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during his tenure, playing a role in steering the 2034 World Cup towards the kingdom. Both figures recently attended a video gaming event supported by Saudi interests in Paris.
