Tourism is a vital economic driver for communities in British Columbia, but its peak season coincides with wildfire season. This summer, several events in the BC Interior have been modified or called off due to smoke and fires. The tourism industry acknowledges that the economic and social impacts of a smoky summer have had lasting effects on communities.
Jonathan Arkle, president of the Apple Race Series Society, expressed disappointment over canceling the Triathlon National Championships in Kelowna on Aug. 9 due to concerns about the health effects of heavy smoke. Environment Canada issued an air quality alert for BC’s south and central Interior, warning of health risks from high smoke levels.
The Fat Dog 120 trail race, scheduled to start on Aug. 7, was also canceled just over a week before over 1,000 participants were expected at Manning Park. Race director Erik Bird cited safety concerns due to ongoing wildfire activity. Registrants will receive a 50% race credit refund, but the financial implications of the cancellation are still being assessed.
In response to the wildfire situation in the Okanagan, the Bush Babes Trail Running organization has secured event cancellation insurance for its upcoming races to ensure registrants receive full refunds if events are called off.
Cassandra Zerebeski, president of Tourism Kelowna, noted that despite event cancellations and smoke, tourists are still visiting, though with increased caution. Some tourists have postponed their trips due to air quality concerns. Approximately 10% of occupied hotel rooms in Kelowna are currently taken by wildfire evacuees.
Tourism Kelowna is promoting indoor activities like wine tasting, shopping, and spas to offset the impact of cancellations and combat the perception of instability from past wildfires. While some events have been canceled, such as concerts in Vernon and a swim in Penticton, the Kamloops Rib Festival is proceeding, with chefs embracing the smoky conditions to enhance the BBQ experience.
