Canada’s male and female teams have progressed to the quarterfinals of the flag football world championships held in Germany. The men’s team secured a spot in the quarterfinals despite a 37-28 loss to Japan, finishing second in their group with a 2-1 record. Due to the Nigerian team’s withdrawal from the tournament, Canada received an automatic win against them. Japan’s quarterback Take Taniguchi threw five touchdown passes, while Canada’s former CFL quarterback Michael O’Connor threw three TD passes. In the upcoming quarterfinal match, Canada will face American Samoa, who surprised by defeating the top-ranked U.S. team.
On the other hand, the women’s team topped their group with a flawless 3-0 record following a 34-20 victory over Japan. They are set to play against Austria in the quarterfinals, with the possibility of advancing to the semifinals against the winner of the Mexico-Spain match. Quarterback Sara Parker shined in the game against Japan, throwing four touchdown passes, two of which were caught by Caroline Moquin-Joubert. Additionally, Alexane Fournier, Marianne Quirion, and Frederique Morneau contributed with TD passes and a rushing touchdown, respectively, as Canada staged an impressive comeback in the second half.
Apart from vying for the world title, teams are also eyeing a chance to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The top two finishers at the world championships will secure Olympic berths as flag football makes its debut at the Olympic program.
