“Canada Faces Critical Stage in Negotiations with U.S. over Tariffs”

Published:

Negotiators from Canada are concerned about the possibility of new U.S. tariffs being implemented on Wednesday. Ottawa is facing challenges in securing relief from Washington on existing sectoral tariffs and convincing provinces to lift restrictions on American alcohol. Multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations have indicated that talks between Canada and the U.S. are ongoing and have reached a critical stage.

Canada’s Trade Minister, Dominic LeBlanc, has been actively engaging in negotiations with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in recent days to pursue a comprehensive agreement. Ottawa is pushing for the removal of new 50 per cent tariffs on nearly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, along with a reduction in existing sectoral tariffs imposed on industries such as steel, aluminum, auto, and lumber.

One of the key sticking points in the negotiations is the demand from the Trump administration for American alcohol sales to resume in Canada. However, the U.S. has not shown willingness to significantly lower the existing sectoral tariffs. Provinces are reluctant to lift their bans on American alcohol until they receive relief on tariffs affecting their respective industries, creating a deadlock in the negotiations.

Provincial cooperation is crucial for Canada to reach an agreement with the U.S., especially regarding the contentious issue of American alcohol sales. Quebec and British Columbia have emphasized their positions on key trade issues, with Quebec insisting on preserving its dairy supply management system and British Columbia advocating for lower tariffs on softwood lumber.

The federal government is urging a unified approach among provinces to address the trade challenges with the U.S. and avoid the implementation of new tariffs. Despite the intense negotiations, there are concerns that a deal may not be reached before the tariff deadline if provincial opposition persists. Both Canadian and U.S. officials are working towards finding common ground to resolve the trade disputes and prevent further escalation of tensions.
