After unknowingly giving her 18-month-old son, Simon, a cashew, Morgan Klachefsky found herself rushing to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department as his face began to swell. Simon was diagnosed with a severe cashew and pistachio allergy after experiencing an anaphylactic reaction that led to his throat closing up.
Following the traumatic experience, Klachefsky became determined to protect Simon from allergen exposure. Despite attending classes on anaphylactic allergies with her husband, Job, her fears grew, leading her to become overly controlling about Simon’s safety during social events like playdates and birthday parties.
As Simon grew older, Klachefsky realized the need to address her escalating anxiety for both her and Simon’s well-being. She gradually learned to trust others with Simon’s care, allowing him more independence and responsibility in managing his allergies.
Over time, Klachefsky’s confidence in others increased as Simon’s friends became knowledgeable about his allergies and actively ensured his safety. This newfound trust enabled Simon to attend his first sleepaway camp, a significant milestone for both mother and son.
Despite initial apprehension, Klachefsky put her faith in Simon and the camp’s safety protocols, allowing him to embark on the adventure. The experience marked a turning point in Klachefsky’s journey of overcoming fear and learning to let go, ultimately strengthening their bond and preparing them for future challenges.
As Simon continues to grow and navigate life with allergies, Klachefsky remains vigilant while empowering him to take charge of his safety. Through shared experiences and trusting relationships, they face each new chapter with courage and resilience.
