In her childhood in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian television series set on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she would eagerly watch “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, developing a particular fondness for Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the show during the 1990s.

Upon discovering that Ruffman would be a guest at a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the series, Czajka didn’t hesitate to secure a ticket. “She was like a Disney princess to me when I was growing up,” Czajka expressed at the convention, having convinced her husband to take her to P.E.I. to attend the event.

Enthusiasts of “Road to Avonlea” traveled from around the globe to the Island for the fully booked convention. The acclaimed Canadian series, which aired in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.

The storyline followed the adventures of young Sarah Stanley (portrayed by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley), who was sent to live with her late mother’s relatives at the beginning of the 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show garnered a global following.

During the three-day convention, attendees enjoyed oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew, and tours of filming locations across the Island. Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, highlighted the enduring appeal of the series, noting its themes of kindness, friendship, and camaraderie.

Mag Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, remarked on the emotional connection fans displayed towards the show. She shared, “The cast and crew present have been deeply moved by the fans’ passion for the show.” Ruffman admitted to occasionally pondering the fate of Aunt Olivia, a character she embodied for years.

Czajka, now reliving the series with her own children, emphasized the rarity of finding a show that resonates across generations. She expressed delight in sharing the experience with her kids, underscoring the show’s timeless quality that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
