“Poundland Completes Restructuring, Closes Stores”

Published:

Poundland recently completed a restructuring program that involved the closure of nearly 150 stores and the elimination of 2,200 jobs. The budget retailer now operates 651 stores, down from approximately 800, with its workforce reduced from 14,200 to around 12,000.

As part of the overhaul, Poundland shut down two warehouses located in Darton, South Yorkshire, and Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands. The company was acquired for £1 by investment firm Gordon Brothers in June last year, averting administration after a rescue plan, including store closures, was sanctioned by the High Court in August.

While Poundland confirmed the conclusion of its restructuring efforts, it acknowledged the need for further actions to achieve its objectives. The company stated that any future closures would result from typical lease events expected in a retail operation with a large store network.

Recent data from Poundland indicates a 2.9% decline in like-for-like underlying sales for the quarter ending December 28. Despite reducing prices to reinforce its discount positioning, the company noted a 2% increase in comparable store sales by volume. In the first quarter, underlying earnings rose to £17.3 million, an £8.4 million increase in line with expectations.

Barry Williams, Poundland’s managing director, emphasized the progress made in reorienting the business with lower prices and a more focused offering but acknowledged the ongoing challenges. Looking ahead to 2026, the company aims to enhance its product ranges and pricing simplicity to meet customer preferences.

Poundland has reintroduced a simplified pricing structure of £1, £2, and £3 for groceries across its UK stores, with the majority of grocery items priced at £1. Additionally, the company has discontinued certain product categories like frozen foods and some chilled ranges, as well as ceased its online operations. The relaunch of in-house designed Pep&Co clothing, with 90% of items priced below £10, is scheduled for the upcoming week, accompanied by a nationwide advertising campaign highlighting the value of its offerings.
