In northern India, a tragic incident unfolded as a woman lost her life following a botched kidney stone surgery by an unqualified individual who allegedly followed a YouTube tutorial. The distressing event took place on December 5 in the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, where the unlicensed practitioner, reportedly intoxicated, caused fatal injuries resulting in the woman’s demise.
Identified as Munishra Rawat, the victim was taken to an unauthorized clinic after complaining of severe stomach pain. Her husband, Fateh Bahadur, sought the services of Gyan Prakash Mishra and Vivek Mishra at Shri Damodar Aushadhalaya. Prakash diagnosed kidney stones and offered surgical treatment for a reduced fee of 20,000 rupees, down from the initial 25,000 rupees.
Bahadur recounted to the Indian Express that the accused, after reviewing an ultrasound report, claimed an urgent need for surgery due to increased gall bladder stones. Allegedly, despite calling other medical professionals for assistance without success, Prakash proceeded with the surgery himself, claiming to have learned the procedure from social media sources.
During the operation, Prakash purportedly relied on a YouTube tutorial video while under the influence of alcohol. Tragically, he made severe incisions in Rawat’s abdomen, causing harm to her stomach, small intestine, and esophagus. Regrettably, the kidney stones remained unaddressed, leading to Rawat’s agonizing death the following day.
Following the woman’s demise, the clinic owners absconded. Rawat leaves behind her husband and three young children. Subsequent to Bahadur filing a complaint, authorities inspected the facility, conducted a post-mortem examination, and pressed charges under the SC/ST Act and culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the proprietors.
Senior police official Amit Singh Bhaduria confirmed the closure of the clinic and stated that the suspects, currently evading authorities, are expected to be apprehended soon. Bhaduria assured, “We inspected the unauthorized clinic post-incident, issued a notice upon finding it closed, and anticipate the imminent arrest of the accused.”
