“Road worker amputee inspires with fundraiser hike”

Published:

A resilient and determined road worker, Brandon Belshaw, faced a life-altering accident when his leg got trapped in a resurfacing machine on October 3. Following the incident, he needed an emergency blood transfusion before being airlifted to the hospital.

After enduring several surgeries and spending five days on a ventilator, Brandon woke up to the news that his right leg had been amputated. Described by his brother, Jordan Smith, as an exceptionally determined and positive individual, Brandon now embarks on a challenging path of recovery and adaptation.

The accident occurred while Brandon was working in Doncaster, leading to the closure of Leicester Avenue in Intake by South Yorkshire Police as emergency services responded. Doctors from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance provided immediate medical assistance on-site before transferring Brandon to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, where he regained consciousness on October 7.

To aid in his recovery, a fundraiser initiated by Brandon’s family has raised over £20,000, with plans for a 12-mile hike in the Lake District, including climbing Helvellyn. This fundraiser symbolizes Brandon’s strength and resilience, mirroring the uphill battles he has faced and those that lie ahead.

Inspired by his annual trips to the Lake District with his girlfriend, Emily, the fundraiser aims to support Brandon’s physical and mental rehabilitation, covering expenses for physiotherapy services, prosthetics, housing modifications, and transport adaptations for independent living. Additionally, 10% of the funds will be contributed to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity.
