500,000 Households to Receive £25 Cold Weather Payments

Published:

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in approximately 250 postcode regions across England and Wales today. This action coincides with the Met Office issuing various winter weather alerts for the upcoming week. More than 500,000 households will qualify for the payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.

The latest round of payments has been initiated in a total of 246 postcodes, encompassing areas such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. The list of postcodes eligible for the payments has been released.

Cold Weather Payments are designated for individuals in England and Wales who are beneficiaries of several benefits. Northern Ireland operates a similar scheme, while in Scotland, assistance with heating bills is provided annually rather than in response to cold weather spells.

Since the beginning of the winter season, £25 payments have been activated for 697 postcode areas, with 18 districts receiving double payments due to prolonged cold weather conditions. The recent payments are projected to benefit around 532,000 households, notably 336,000 in Greater Manchester, resulting in a total expenditure of £13.3 million for today’s Cold Weather Payments alone.

In England and Wales, a payment is triggered when an area is expected to experience below-zero temperatures for seven consecutive days. Meteorologists are forecasting a cold spell leading into the New Year, with subzero temperatures anticipated in numerous regions.

An estimated 3.9 million individuals are eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, including 1.2 million receiving Pensions Credit. Those receiving specific benefits, such as Pension Credit, Income Support, and Universal Credit, may qualify for the Cold Weather Payment, although eligibility is subject to various criteria outlined on the GOV.UK website.

The £25 payments are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, identified by a payment reference containing the customer’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. No application is required to receive this payment.

The activation of Cold Weather Payments has been prompted by weather stations in various locations, each estimated to benefit a specific number of eligible households.
