Being an avid reader, I have a habit of consuming books at a rapid pace, often completing multiple novels in a single week. Despite this, the more I read, the better I become at anticipating the outcomes of the stories I immerse myself in.
While I don’t necessarily find this overly bothersome – and even enjoy a cliché-filled romance every now and then – there’s a certain thrill in discovering a book that surpasses all preconceived notions. Unexpected plot twists, unanticipated antagonists, and unconventional endings are all elements that I wholeheartedly welcome into my library.
Here are five books that I’ve devoured this year, each keeping me on edge until the final pages. Spanning various genres like literary fiction, fantasy, science fiction, and non-fiction, these selections have been detailed by the Express.
In “The Rabbit Club,” an American adolescent finds himself entangled in the secretive and manipulative world of the elite Saracens upon his arrival in Oxford. As his aspirations heighten, the lines between reality and fantasy blur, setting off a series of events with unforeseeable consequences that transcend imagination.
Delving into this dark academia thriller proved to be a perplexing experience, delving much deeper and intricately than I had anticipated. The conclusion left me reeling – prompting an immediate urge to revisit the entire book to uncover any overlooked details.
For those seeking an immersive autumnal read, this book is a must.

In Joe Hill’s “King Sorrow,” six friends forge a deadly pact with a dragon in his first novel in almost a decade. Following Arthur, Gwen, Colin, Donna, Van, and Allie over forty years, they are compelled to select a fresh victim for King Sorrow every Easter – or face dire consequences.
Despite its nearly 900-page length, one might assume portions of this novel to be tedious or predictable. However, that couldn’t be further from reality. “King Sorrow” takes readers on a genre-bending rollercoaster ride, teeming with unforeseen twists and turns that caught me off guard.
While I was fortunate to receive an advance copy, this novel will hit the shelves later this month.
